AUTUMN 2009 INTERNATIONALS - ENGLAND V ARGENTINA / FIJI
Apr 6, 2009, 1:28 pm

The Club has received application forms for the above two internationals taking place in November 2009. As these are not Grade ! internationals the demand for tickets is likely to be less and the Club will not be using a ballot system for allocating tickets to the games. Members wishing to buy tickets are encouraged to use these "early bird" forms individually if they so desire and apply direct to the RFU for tickets. A link to the forms is included in Club Members News page of this site and below.

Colts finish league campaign well
Apr 6, 2009, 10:15 am
The Colts put on a spectacular display of running rugby in their last league fixture of the season and pushed the unbeaten league champions Bishop's Stortford to the brink of defeat, but could not quite make it.  When time ran out the score was 2 converted tries, 3 unconverted and a penalty kick to 5 converted tries (32-35).   The match was of the highest quality, and much appreciated by a large crowd who provided our team with full-throated support.
We went quickly into the lead in the first ten minutes through 2 tries out wide from Alex (proving that university life has not slowed him up).   The opposition then came into the game and scored four converted tries with some penetrating runs helped by some missed tackles from us: a penalty kick from Phil made the score 13-28 at half time.

In the second half we tightened up our defence, making tackles that were missed in the first half,   and outplayed the opposition  with well taken tries from Sam F and Nick each ably converted by Phil.  Unfortunately with the score standing at 27-28 Bishop's Stortford were strong enough to break through our defence with a good attack for a fifth converted try.   Oscar then expertly released Alex for a final touchdown to get his hat-trick. We won the second half 19-7: this was just not enough to win the match, but it was more than enough to show that on their day the Colts can play as well as any opposition.

Squad: Nick Lewis, Andrew Bullmore, Matt Kujawski, Michael Coley, Sam Kelly (Capt), Dorian Craddock, Scott Wolsey, Robbie Phillips, Connor Reddington, Jake Phipps, Sam Fussell, Alex Petrides, Bryan Stuart, Oscar Dodd, Phil Tipping, Josh Glasscock, Ryan Griffin.

Scorers: Tries -Alex (3), Sam F, Nick; Cons -Phil (2); Pen -Phil.

Saracens Club Alumni Day - Saturday 18th April - Message from Richard Hill
Apr 5, 2009, 7:30 pm

Dear Saracen

We now have confirmed arrangements for the exciting Saracens events scheduled for Saturday 18th April at Bramley Road.

First on the menu will be the Womens Premiership match between Saracens  and Wasps, kicking off at 2:00pm. This will be followed at 4:30pm by the Saracens Scimitars taking on the John Buckton Invitational XV in their traditional annual fixture.

Straight after the Old Boys match, we will be inducting past players from the forties to the nineties into the Saracens Hall of Fame which will be a great honour for those deserving Saracens. Please turn out on the 18th to show your support for your Club colleagues during the day and early evening.

It has been to decided to celebrate the evening in a more traditional way in the Bramley Road clubhouse, which seems to mirror the thoughts of the majority. The Saracens U17's will run a pay barbeque on the day, which will be raising funds for their tour to South Africa.

If you have sent a booking form in with a cheque, this will not be cashed and I apologise for the inconvenience.

I would personally like to thank Lucy Wray who has worked extremely hard to promote this event and help publicise it, along with Charles Portsmouth, Steve Ravenscroft, Robin Bye, Julia Young and Clare Jackson.

We now need to see your support of the Saracens alumni on 18th April.

See you there

Richard Hill

Colts' league hopes dashed
Mar 23, 2009, 11:50 am

The Colts were on the wrong end of a thumping defeat on 22 March by Hertford who ran out winners by 5 converted tries and 2 unconverted to 2 converted tries (45-14).   Once again our team failed to find the aggression and conviction necessary to play well and win away from home, and on this occasion were overpowered particularly in the forwards by a team playing direct, well-drilled rugby.  As at Petersfield, opposition supporters said their team had never played so well before this season -there is something about the Saracens badge that brings out the best in the opposition when we turn up at their ground.

Hertford scored just before the break to make the score 19-7 at half time and the game seemed out of reach: unsurprisingly they went on to accumulate a big total.  We saved some dignity with a well taken try in each half. The first was the result of a determined break by Oscar to put Phil over out wide, and the second was also the result of an individual's determination, this time by a quick thinking Sam K breaking through two tacklers to touch down from short range.  Phil and Mark converted well. Connor R made an impressive impact when he came on.

This ends our hope of catching Bishop's Stortford, who in addition were given a Walk Over V Welwyn yesterday and are now out of sight winners of the Division. However we can salvage a lot with a convincing performance against them at home on 5 April.

Squad: Nick Lewis, Andrew Bullmore, Connor Jennings, Phil Anastasi, Connor Reddington, Jonathan Keane, Jamie Lewis, Sam Kelly (Capt), Scott Wolsey, Robbie Phillips, Dorian Craddock, Brian Stuart, Jake Phipps, Sam Fussell, Ryan Griffin, Oscar Dodd, Matt Finn, Josh Glasscock, Phil Tipping, Alex Petrides, Mark Ward.

Scorers: Tries -Phil, Sam K. Cons -Phil, Mark.

Lucky's Man of the Match: Robbie for his characteristically fearsome tackling and ball carrying

Saracens 1st XV 41 - Old Millhillians 3
Mar 16, 2009, 4:41 pm
A comprehensive League victory for Saracens at Bramley Road this weekend was watched by an enthusiastic crowd, who were rewarded with 6 tries by the young home team.

With Old Millhillians rooted firmly to the foot of the Herts/Middlesex 1 table, Saracens took the opportunity to give places in the squad to some of the talented U.19s who will be coming into the Senior side next season. The youngsters needed no second invitation and rose to the occasion, providing some excellent performances and a glimpse of the strength in depth available to the team.

In the pack, young tight head Phil Anastasi made an impressive 1st XV debut at scrum time, plus was part of an all-U.19 front lineout pod that dominated procedings and disrupted OMs ball continuously. Front jumper Dan Shepherd and jumper/lifter Sam Kelly completed this unit, and additionally performed well across the park.

Leslie and Scott Wolsey both added pace and bite at the breakdown from the back row during their second half appearances, and provided essential supporting link play for the rampant Saracens back line. Andy Harrison scored the sole forward's try of the day when he crashed over under the posts from a short range tap penalty.

Restored to full strength with the return of full back Jeff Rice, the Saracens backs were hungry and dangerous throughout, often linking beautifully on the break to exploit the spaces in the OMs defence. Chris Hurrell, Nick Bird and Jeff Rice [2] all added tries, with Adam Smith kicking 4 conversions and a penalty.

Man of the Match went to substitute scrum half Peter Smith, who produced a superb 40 minutes in both attack and defence, culminating in a breakaway try following a pick up from the base of the scrum by Dan Jagessar.

Colts sustain league challenge
Mar 9, 2009, 10:12 am

The Colts did everything right on Sunday 8 March beating Welwyn Colts in a home league match by 3 converted tries, 3 unconverted tries and a penalty kick to one penalty kick (39-3), and by virtue of scoring 4 tries adding a bonus league point to the four points gained for the win.   We had scored those four tries before half time in good but cold conditions, making the score 29-3 at the turn-around.  The second half was played in torrential rain which inevitably restricted our style somewhat, but even so we ran in two more tries.  This was another performance of great commitment and quality from the Colts, with 22 players in the squad all contributing mightily.   Very well played again boys.

Welwyn, who are not at their strongest this season and are now bottom of the league, kept going gamely till the end.

This keeps us in second place in the league to unbeaten Bishop Stortford, who yesterday showed us what will be required to sustain our challenge in our next match on 22 March by beating Hertford at Hertford 3-36.

Squad: Nick Lewis, Andrew Bullmore, David Johnson, Connor Reddington, Connor Jennings, Phil Anastasi, Lewis Hewitt, Dorian Craddock, Sam Kelly, Jamie Lewis, Scott Wolsey, Robbie Phillips, Dan Shepherd (Capt), Jake Phipps, Sam Fussell, Oscar Dodd, Matt Finn, Bryan Stuart, Ryan Griffin, Josh Glasscock, Pat Hicks, Phil Tipping.

Scorers: Tries -Robbie, Jake, Oscar, Nick, Ryan, Phil. Cons -Phil (3). Pen -Phil.

Lucky's Man of the Match: Mattie.
